Hopefully
No matter how hopeful you are, you just can’t win with “hopefully.”
We could write many paragraphs about the various objections word mavens have to the adverb hopefully used as a so-called sentence adverb in a construction like: Hopefully, our presentation will win the account. We’ll spare you the details and simply say that this is a usage hot button for people who care about words. If you want to win the account, don’t use it. But hopefully is always acceptable as a standard adverb modifying a verb: “May I have this dance?” the prince asked hopefully, just as Cinderella fled in her glass slippers.
